Every year, student leaders pass the baton of leadership on to a new group of student leaders. The very nature of student leadership is transitional. The quality of this transition will affect learning and legacy. Here's some of the reasons why an effective transition period is so important:
• Sharing information is important to give new leadership a running start.
• Turnover often causes confusion. When incoming and outgoing leadership spends time together it helps to overcome that confusion.
• Passing on one's expertise and experience gives the outgoing leader a sense of accomplishment and closure.
• Experience is a valuable contribution to give to the incoming leader.
• The outgoing leader can provide valuable insight into what the incoming leader can expect.
• New leadership is more confident, more knowledgeable through a proper transition process.
• Effective transitions can help to maintain momentum and accomplishment.
• Student organizations don't feel the "bump in the road" as much with a smooth transition.
Transitions are a constant in the world of student leadership. They can create a sense of anticipation for new student leaders and closure for outgoing student leaders. Next, I'll take a look at the process of transitioning new student leaders in.
