Focus On Learning

September is traditionally the time when students head back to school.  In my own house, my kids are showing off their new school supplies, new school clothes, and talking about their new teachers.  While there is great excitement to get back to school to see their friends, there is one thing that wasn't high on the "can't wait to do that again" list -- homework.

I think the reason that my kids (your kids and just about every kid) doesn't like homework is because when you break down the word "homework," you discover that there is "work" involved.  That's right.  Learning doesn't come easily for most of us.  It takes work. It takes time. It takes practice.

I am reminded of the importance of learning from my friend, Rosa Say who writes the Talking Story blog.  She is dedicating the month of September to focus on the importance of learning and developing good learning habits.

For all the student leaders that read this, let me say that being a learner is a pre-requisite for being a leader.  Even the term - student leader - reflects a heart for learning and developing oneself.

So I encourage you to do the hard work of learning.  In fact, I think the harder it is to learn something, the more worthwhile it is.  It was Benjamin Franklin that said, "The things that hurt, instruct."  Take time to read Rosa's blog.  I'll be posting a 5x5s in the next few days on the subject of learning.  Let's start the year off with an enthusiastic push toward learning all we can this year.
