Greetings studentlinc readers:
This is an update to let you know what's going on with this website and my own investment in it.
Many of you have been longtime readers and a great support to the tools, resources, and articles that I have put on this site. I started studentlinc in 2005 and used this site as my own sandbox in the area of leadership development, learning to blog, and designing an online resource.
It's now time for the next chapter in my online world. While I've still been involved in writing and developing tools for student leaders, I haven't done very much on this site. Over the last few months, I've been considering a number of options and have finally started to move in some new directions. I hope this post will explain what and why I'm making some changes. Here they are:
1. I have started a new website/blog at timmilburn.com. This site will now be my main blogging/writing/thinking/resource home. I have found that I have more to talk about beyond student leadership. While I will continue to delve into the areas of leadership, this site will have more of my personality and include many of my other interests. I plan on moving many of my downloads/tools to the resource page of that site.
Some of you may be wondering...why? My simple answer is because things always change...especially on the internet. The more personal answer is because I'm finding that I want to develop a more personal brand on the web. I believe a personal website does this. I think this will help me develop better relationships with my readers because they will come to the site of a person rather than an organization or topic (like studentlinc).
2. I will be archiving studentlinc. Another reason for the change is because I am moving away from Typepad. I started studentlinc in 2005 on Blogger. I told myself that I wouldn't pay for my blog until I had proven that I would stick with it. When I reached 100 posts, I went ahead and bought a basic Typepad account and moved the site over. When I reached 200 posts, I upgraded to a Typepad Pro account and have had that since.
But along the way, Wordpress kept showing what a great blogging platform it was. So when I started timmilburn.com (on March 25, 2010) I started the site on a self-hosted Wordpress platform using the Standard theme. I am slowly learning to use Wordpress and am LOVING it.
So in the next month, I will be moving studentlinc out from under Typepad and into a self-hosted Wordpress setup at studentlinc.net. This will save me the subscription cost of having a Typepad account. It's also important to note that moving from Typepad to Wordpress is an incredibly difficult and tedious process if you want to keep your links, images, and permalinks intact. I don't know if I am willing to go through that process. If I don't, then all of the permalinks to my posts will be lost (creating some dead links across the web from those who have linked to me). All of my posts will still be available at studentlinc.net but they will have new permalinks. I'm still deciding if I'm going to do that work.
3. Finally, my request of you...if you subscribed or were a regular reader of studentlinc, then I encourage you to head over to timmilburn.com and pick up the RSS feed. It's my new home. Like I said, I'll continue to write and develop leadership tools specifically targeted for students (I just wrote a post called, When Will The Leader Emerge). But I'm going to diversify a little as well. In the process, I'm hoping to build a better relationship with YOU, the reader.
Once again, thank you for your support of studentlinc. I am grateful for the opportunity to share and learn right alongside of you.
Wishing you the best,
